System leadership

Mulberry Schools Trust plays a role in supporting the wider education system and empowering young people on a global stage. We are committed to sharing expertise, supporting other schools and collaborating with partners who share our values.

The Trust works closely with schools facing challenging circumstances to provide support that helps them to achieve sustainable improvement. We have previously done this through the DfE’s Trust and School Improvement offer and, more recently, the RISE (Regional Improvement in Standards and Excellence) programme.  Through this work, we have a positive impact beyond our own schools, building leadership capacity and driving forward sustainable improvement that benefits pupils and communities.

We also contribute extensively to research, professional development and knowledge-sharing. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Trust helped establish and lead Reconnect London, a collaborative network which brought together London schools to share expertise and practical support. The Trust also contributed to the government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review, with the CEO being part of the independent panel who undertook the review.

Our influence reaches globally through the Global Girl Leading programme, which empowers young women to create change locally, nationally, and internationally. Each year, the Global Girl Leading Summit brings together students from partner schools to participate in workshops, debates, and leadership activities. By celebrating the voices and ambitions of girls, the programme inspires them to become values-led leaders and changemakers.

Through these initiatives, Mulberry Schools Trust demonstrates its commitment to achieving excellence for all. By supporting other schools, developing leaders and inspiring communities locally and globally, the Trust makes a lasting, positive impact on education both within and beyond its own schools.

Dr. Vanessa Ogden is the founding CEO of the Mulberry Schools Trust. Vanessa has undertaken extensive school improvement and system leadership work over the last 20 years. She holds a doctorate in education, and has published widely in academic and professional contexts.

Vanessa is Chair of the Fair Education Alliance and the Unicorn Theatre, and a trustee of the WOW (Women of the World) Foundation. Vanessa is also the founder of Global Girl Leading, and the co-founder of Reconnect London.

Curriculum and assessment review

The UK Government’s curriculum and assessment review aims to ensure that the curriculum appropriately balances ambition, excellence, relevance, flexibility and inclusivity for all children and young people. Vanessa Ogden is one of 11 members of the panel chaired by Professor Becky Francis CBE, CEO of the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).

Through the kaleidoscope

Vanessa shares her insights on school leadership and place-based change in a special paper ‘Looking Through the Kaleidoscope: School leadership and place-based change’ from October 2024.

UNESCO

"The concept of ‘place’ is very important to us. We serve in places where child poverty is very high and where a great education is essential for your future prosperity – your path to decent employment, a home, financial security and happiness. So much work is done together with families to generate change locally and build social harmony. This includes our big entrepreneurial Mulberry Changemaker programmes.”

Vanessa’s reflections on school leadership in a special blog for UNESCO, focusing on the Trust’s flagship conference Global Girl Leading, held in October 2024, which brought together young women and leaders to share insight and experience, inspire change and empower girls worldwide.

Her candid reflections explore her own distinctive perspective on the challenges and opportunities of leadership in education, and how the conference celebrated and amplified the voices of young women, showcasing the persistently transformative power of education.
