Sixth form and beyond

Sixth Form and beyond

Our schools are empowering young people to take control of their futures, make informed decisions and develop the skills they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.

Amazing

There’s no better time to consider continuing an education with the Mulberry Schools Trust at Sixth Form, enjoying our support not only for learning and academic qualifications, but also for personal development and onward progression in post-school life. Four of our schools currently provide post-16 education and support:
  • Mulberry School for Girls
  • Mulberry UTC
  • Mulberry Academy Shoreditch
  • Mulberry Stepney Green Maths, Computing and Science College
All of them have enjoyed a development programme during the 2023–24 academic year that has enhanced the support and further improved the outcomes for students across the Trust. We are evolving our service and support across five key areas:
  • teaching and learning
  • learning beyond the classroom
  • careers, destinations and progression
  • extra-curricular activities and enrichment
  • support for personal development, mental health and well-being
The focus is not only on academic achievement but also on students’ personal, social and emotional development and the support they need to prepare for post-school life. This ensures everyone has access to high quality academic and technical learning along with excellent personal development, pastoral care and careers guidance, wherever they study.

Teaching and learning

Each of the four schools apply principles of effective Sixth Form teaching and learning in their distinctive contexts, drawing on their collective experience, expertise and research evidence. School lesson plans and teaching strategies align with an overarching vision, and insights from their experience are shared with other headteachers and the Trust’s leadership team. This fosters a sense of common purpose and a culture of continuous improvement across the Trust, enabling leaders and teachers to draw on Trust-wide examples of strong practice, to identify where services can be enhanced to ensure they are all providing an outstanding education and enrichment programme for all their students.

Learning beyond the classroom

The transition from GCSEs to A Levels, technical and vocational qualifications brings greater academic rigour, with a need for deeper analysis, critical thinking and self-discipline. Our extensive support helps students develop study skills and learn independently. Improving skills helps them manage workloads and approach studies more effectively and alleviates stress, as students feel more in control of their learning journey. This empowers them to manage their academic responsibilities, builds their confidence and prepares them for future education and professional challenges. As the Trust family is serving communities facing profound social and economic disadvantage and disparity, our schools also facilitate study outside of lessons for students who may not have access to a quiet space for studying at home.

Careers, destinations and progression

Careers advice and guidance is a crucial element of our support for students when they are facing choices that will shape their future. Although this does not start in Sixth Form, it is particularly crucial at this stage in their academic journey when they are applying for university and apprenticeships. Our schools have a range of programmes to help them explore different career paths, understand the qualifications and skills required for various professions, and to make informed decisions about their next steps. Many of our Year 13 students secure a place at university, while others embark on further study, pursue degree apprenticeships or enter the world of work. You can find out more about our students’ journeys beyond their time with us in our ‘Going Places’ report we publish each year.

Extra-curricular activities and enrichment

Whatever their background or circumstances, and wherever they study with us, all our students enjoy extensive extra-curricular enrichment opportunities and trailblazing partnerships that challenge and inspire, helping build the confidence and skills they need to succeed and thrive. This activity is particularly fruitful for our Sixth Form students, offering them opportunities to develop skills, build relationships and explore their passions beyond the academic curriculum. Participating in clubs, teams and societies not only helps Sixth Form students learn to collaborate with peers, work as part of a team and communicate effectively with others, but extra-curricular activities are often a way to explore potential career interests. Our innovative Mulberry Changemakers programmes reflect our aspirations for greater inclusivity not only in education but beyond the classroom, across society and the economy. They are designed to help remove barriers to access, participation, progression, attainment and achievement, particularly in the cultural and creative sector and STEM-related industries, where the kinds of disadvantage and diversity that distinguish the communities we serve are so conspicuously under-represented in the workplace.

Mulberry Arts

is our extensive Trust-wide arts provision spanning theatre, dance, music, film, conferences and training for employment in the creative industries.

Mulberry Production Arts Academy

It offers supplementary learning in technology, maths, engineering, physical science and design, and aims to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in this industry by providing a pathway for talented students from local schools and a pipeline into careers in STEM-related industries.

The Mulberry Scholars Academy

Its comprehensive, tailored approach combines academic excellence with personal guidance, ensuring that students are fully equipped to meet the distinctive demands of top-tier higher education institutions. Beyond the classroom

Support for personal development, mental health and well-being

Trust schools provide comprehensive support for Sixth Form students’ mental health and well-being. Students are under considerable pressure during this crucial time on their educational journey and we know that a nurturing and supportive environment, paying particular attention physical and mental health, is crucial for ensuring they can achieve and thrive in life as well as in their learning. Academic stress is a distinctive challenge. As they prepare for exams, complete coursework and consider their post-school futures, the pressure to achieve and succeed can become overwhelming. Everyone is also exploring their identity, forming new relationships and preparing for greater independence, all of which can easily trigger uncertainty, self-doubt and loneliness. We are committed to supporting them with any counselling or complementary wellbeing services they might need, within a compassionate and supportive school and Trust-wide culture, which not only helps to address any immediate needs but also equips students with coping mechanisms and resilience that will serve them throughout their lives.

Our partners

The Trust’s extensive network of partnerships with organisations across the education, business, community and culture sectors, plays a fundamental role in the rich and inspiring learning experience our students enjoy beyond the classroom, and the advice and support they need to thrive in work and life. They contribute enriching opportunities and insights with visits, speakers, mentoring, access and activities that broaden our students’ horizons with ideas, knowledge and experiences beyond the academic environment.

Sixth Form spotlight

Our ‘Sixth Form spotlight’ booklet showcases how our schools have been enhancing their support, and provides more information about some of the Trust-wide programmes available to students, wherever they study. Over 75% of our Year 13 students in 2023–24 secured a place at university, while others embarked on further study, pursued degree apprenticeships or entered the world of work. This is an exciting and rewarding time for the aspirational young adults we serve, as they embark on the next chapter of their lives, leaving us equipped with the energy, hope and ambition they will need to prosper and thrive.
