A Fantastic Term for Societies
A fantastic term for Societies
The Year 9 Societies students have been busy this term enjoying a variety of interesting, educational trips linked to the different subjects they are passionate about.
From 1st-4th October, 29 students from across the Trust who are involved in Societies visited the island of Sicily to explore. They flew into Palermo Airport and spent the rest of the day exploring the city of Palermo. The following day they took a trip to the ancient city of Agrigento in the south of the island. Agrigento became one the leading cities in the Mediterranean world in the 6th century B.C. The group then travelled to Letojanni where they stayed for the next 2 nights. From there they took trips to Siracusa, L’Ortiga and Catania and even to see the recently erupted Mount Etna which is the most active and tallest volcano in Europe. The students got to try some local food of Sicily including arancini, pasta alla Norma, cannoli and of course lots of ice cream.
On Thursday 17th October, the History Society went to explore HMS Belfast, a ship that was built for the Royal Navy but is now permanently moored as a museum ship on the River Thames. They discovered that the ship played a part in D- Day and also fought in the Korean War. HMS Belfast is a Town-class cruiser, named after the capital city of Northern Ireland as well as being constructed there.
Also in October, the Science Society went to the London Science Museum and watched a film about Earth and space called A Beautiful Planet 3D in the IMAX cinema. Students had a great time and are looking forward to their next trip!
On Tuesday 19th November, the Economics and Sports societies braved the snowy start to the day to head off to Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea football club. After a long and cold journey the students spent some time in the Chelsea museum taking penalties against Manuel Neuer, testing their reflexes on the goalkeeper training lights (well done Sakariya on being the champ) or competing on FIFA. We then went on a tour around the Bridge with students getting to sit under the bright lights of a press conference, hang out in the Chelsea dressing room and sit out in the famous Chelsea dugout, all while learning about the finances of the Premier League.
On Wednesday 11th December, the History Society went to the extraordinary house and museum of Sir John Soane (pictured above), one of the greatest English architects, who built and lived in it two centuries ago. The museum has been kept as it was at the time of his death in 1837, and displays his vast collection of antiquities, furniture, sculptures, architectural models and paintings. Students from across four schools in the Trust learned about Empire and its impact across the world in a workshop before having a tour of the museum to look at the artifacts collected by Sir John Soane.
The following week, the Year 9 Politics Society enjoyed a fantastic trip to City Hall where the London Mayor works and the London Assembly meets. Students were given a fascinating insight into the work of the London Assembly and were able to ask lots of questions about the priorities facing London today. Our highlight was being able to sit in on a meeting of the London Assembly where they were discussing (and debating!) key issues. The students loved the experience and got fully involved – future politicians in the making!
