Back-to-Back Triumphs at Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge
Mulberry Academy Woodside proudly hosted this year’s Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge Regional Final, building on last year’s triumph when Aleiya Francis claimed victory. Continuing the legacy, Year 10’s Mawada emerged as this year’s champion, securing Woodside’s second consecutive win. Mawada, alongside fellow Year 10 participants Havin and Grace, delivered powerful speeches that captivated the audience.
The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, held on February 4, 2025, is part of the largest public speaking programme in England, managed by Speakers Trust and supported by the Jack Petchey Foundation.
The Speak Out Challenge aims to amplify young voices by building confidence, developing skills, and creating platforms for young people to share their stories and ideas. Each year, the programme empowers over 30,000 Year 10 students across London and Essex with free communication skills training.
Mawada’s speech, titled “Redefining Family,” captivated the audience with its powerful message that family is not solely defined by biological ties but by the meaningful connections and support shared with those who make one feel like they belong. This insightful perspective resonated with the judges and audience alike, earning Mawada the top spot among 17 finalists.
Reflecting on the achievement, Mawada expressed, “It’s my birthday today, and it’s the best birthday present ever. I am so happy I won.” This victory is a testament to Mawada’s dedication and the supportive environment fostered by Mulberry Academy Woodside.
The Haringey Regional Final saw participation from 596 young people, showcasing the incredible talent and potential within the community. Jack Petchey‘s Speak Out Challenge continues to champion effective, positive communication, contributing to education, employability, and social change.
